This week, we talk with Melissa Sutherland, director of merchant solutions for LegitScript, a compliance company. Sutherland is also deeply involved with the Merchant Acquirers’ Committee, otherwise known as MAC. MAC is an industry organization focused on risk management.

In anticipation of the organization’s conference beginning March 21, we talk with Sutherland about the benefits of MAC membership and the reasons she’s involved. She shares some of the background behind the formation of the organization. The founders, she said, wanted to feel free to share information with each other about fraud and “didn’t want to be constricted by competition.”

Businesses large and small were and continue to be MAC members. While the organization does include some payment facilitators, Sutherland said she hopes the PF membership increases.

Payment facilitators’ unique perspective is a valuable part of the MAC conversation, she said, in part because they are more likely to come to the table without preconceived notions.

“Payment facilitators tend to run right up to the bleeding edge of how payments are supposed to work, and kind of re-envision the way it should work – the way it’s going to work – to suit their needs,” she said.

Sutherland said that the conference promises a unique experience that is valuable for attendees, whether they are from large, established organizations, or newer, smaller ones.

“We don’t carve up the data or the trainings and the educational opportunities based on who you are,” she said. “As long as you’re a member of the team, you’re welcome to come to all the sessions.”
