Payments innovator Square has launched a new offering for small businesses that takes them outside the payments box. Square Photo Studio leverages robotics technology to provide sellers with a more affordable alternative to traditional photography, according to the company.

As traditional photography can often times be time-consuming and cost-prohibitive, Square Photo Studio enables sellers to submit a product and have it robotically photographed in under 14 days and at one tenth of the average cost. A win for both players, sellers find benefit in the affordability and accessibility, the company said, while it enables Square to expand their brand and value-add services to their clients.

In their announcement, Square also referenced the importance of product tangibility when it comes to online selling. “Without being able to physically touch a product, photography is an essential component to selling online, whether on your online store or on other channels like Amazon, Etsy, and Instagram,” said Square Ecommerce General Manager David Rusenko.

And the public seems to agree. A recent survey of online shoppers referenced in the same article revealed that 75% of shoppers find photography a very influential part of their purchase, with 79% expecting to find product shots offered in multiple angles.

“We built Square Photo Studio because we don’t want anyone to be priced out of professional product photography. We’re always working on new and exciting ways to give online sellers access to the tools they need to make a sale – regardless of what channel they’re selling on,” said Rusenko.

Potential downsides, according to E-Commerce Times, revolve around shipping and scale. 

Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group told the online publication that shipping introduces “too much time and risk into the process,” while scale can also be a challenge. 

“There’s a lot of automation required to do this at scale,” said Enderle. “I’m not sure how they would handle the jump from 10 requests a day to 100 and then 1,000, for instance.”
